FAITH IN FORM CONFERENCE
“exploring the threshold between contemporary art forms and the modern Church.”

All events to be held in the new Carmelite Friary Centre for Prayer and Spirituality, Kinsale, Co. Cork 

Events Programme

Friday, 17 October: 6:00pm: Opening of FAITH IN FORM national juried exhibition of contemporary Christian art. 2/D and 3/D artworks in a variety of media selected from an open national submission from artists who articulate Christian faith in new languages. 

Saturday, 18 October: Conference Programme:

10.00 am (registration begins) until 5pm. (conferemce fee €30.00 or €25.00 for V.A.I members)

Morning session:

PATRICK PYE:

To share his life as an artist working from a perspective of faith.

“The artist is naturally in line with the writers of the Gospels for whom the heart was an organ of understanding, not of feeling. The artist must learn to see with the heart.” Logos Journal

Irish painter and author, based in Dublin. Member of Aosdana and the RHA. Solo show in Ib Jorgensen Gallery, Dublin opening 1 October.

REV. CHARLES PICKSTONE:

To speak about the role that contemporary artists play in developing new languages that can invigorate our faith.

Art critic (1987-2001 for the Month, Jesuit journal, London; other writings in: Modern Painters, Apollo, Guardian, Times, Art Monthly, Church Building, ARTS, Image, Modern Believing, Theology, Church Times, World Faith Encounter. Winner of 2006 Bernard Denvir/AICA prize for art criticism).

Afternoon session:

LAURA MOFFATT:

To describe the aims, activities, structures, and funding of her active organisation supporting contemporary Christian art and architecture.

Director of Art and Christianity Enquiry (ACE), the UK’s leading educational organisation in the field of visual art and religion. She also recently co-authored with Edwin Heathcote, Contemporary Church Architecture, (John Wiley 2007).

The afternoon session will conclude with a panel discussion to explore the potential creation of a new Irish Art/Faith organisation.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC FROM IRISH AND SPANISH TRADITIONS WILL BE PERFORMED BY THE CORRIGAN FAMILY

Sunday 19 October: 

Special Music in Sunday Liturgy 11:00am 

Closing Programme: Film matinee 3:00pm (free)

“INTO GREAT SILENCE” 2005 Philip Groening  196min. “Silence. Repetition. Rhythm. The film is an austere, next to silent meditation on monastic life in a very pure form. . .” An intimate portrayal of the everyday lives of Carthusian monks high in a remote corner of the French Alps.
